Meet Andrew from Modspace - making affordable homes a reality.

Andrew Abercrombie is the founder and director of Modspace homes: a company building smaller transportable houses, allowing people to get into warm, efficient homes that don’t cost you the earth.

Andrew is someone who likes to embrace new ideas, he is innovative and happy to disrupt the status quo. He takes a common sense approach, rejecting methods that others only follow out of habit.

Andrew’s Background

Born in Whangarei, Andrew spent twelve years in the Kamo public schools.  He remembers those early years fondly, where he enjoyed playing rugby on Saturdays with friends.

His first job for seven years was with a modular kitchen company, so he learnt the benefits of mass production and how to get maximum efficiencies through innovation, time management and task management.

Building & Construction

Andrew saved hard to buy his first section at 21 years old, and designed and built his first home at 22 years old.

Later, Andrew worked for his brother’s construction company as a Project Manager from 2004 until 2015 travelling between Kerikeri and Whangarei. After a 13-year career and driven by a desire for more family time and community involvement, Andrew Abercrombie established Site Scope in Kerikeri in 2016. Site Scope was a Project Management company with the goal of helping clients navigate the regulations in the construction industry. Today Site Scope is still helping their small home clients with their building and resource consents

Andrews Major Achievement’s to date

Working with the commercial construction industry, Andrew soon realised that there were many inefficiencies in traditional building methods. This drove him to develop the Modspace Chassis system, which Site Scope manufactures and has been successfully used in numerous Ministry of Education classrooms.  As Site Scope grew, Andrew was pleased to bring two of his sons into the business.

Modspace Homes (by Site Scope)

Building on the success of the Chassis system, Site Scope looked to expand into other modular building.

In 2022, Recognising New Zealand's housing challenges, Site Scope grew to include Modspace® Transportable Homes with the goal of making homeownership more achievable and providing high quality, safe housing.

Modspace homes range between 17m² and 60m² and can be joined or arranged in a modular design. They are prefabricated in the factory, ensuring maximum quality control, and passing along the efficiencies to the customer in the final price. Unlike some small homes on the market, Modspace homes are built with timber framing, to NZ Building Code to last 50+ years. They use a vented cavity batten system, and vapour barrier to protect against any moisture, ensuring the home stays cozy and dry. Each home is certified by the local council, so that customers can trust they’re not taking any shortcuts.
